Experimental Materials 'Salt Imaginaries’

Formed as part of an installation called 'Salt Imaginaries’ at the Design Museum the beautiful 3-dimensional self-supporting interlocking tiles were formed using a mix of plaster and salt from the Atacama desert in Chile. Salt as a medium for interior material is incredibly interesting especially when the world of biomaterials is growing.

Over time the salt will react with the humidity in the room ( therefore regulating it), and eventually crystallise creating an organic environment whose form will grow and change over time, a living space, something more akin to a natural cave rather than a curated interior. This installation and use of such a versatile organic material will make us question whether our spaces need to be static and constant and in the future, can built interiors themselves become organic and ever-changing.
